Baptism is a sacred and joyous occasion. It marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith.
We are delighted that you have decided to celebrate the sacrament of baptism as a parent, godparent, family member or friend. A sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward an invisible grace. Baptism, therefore, is a ceremony in which we are washed with water in order to symbolise the cleansing of our hearts by Jesus Christ. It marks the beginning of the Christian journey which continues throughout our lives. Here we are also encouraged to remember our own baptism and commit ourselves anew to walking in Christ’s way with those who are now to be baptised.
The baptism service includes vivid and powerful symbols of our faith: water, which cleanses and refreshes us; the sign of the cross on our forehead to mark our following in Christ’s path of self-sacrificial love; and a lighted candle, to show our lives as illuminated by Christ, the Light of the World. The language of the service below is taken from the Book of Common Prayer.
Baptisms are a cherished tradition at Chelsea Old Church, with around 75 baptisms taking place each year. These ceremonies often arise from our renowned weekly Family Service, which draws families from across London.
Baptism Services
Baptisms are held on one or two Sunday afternoons each month.
Each baptism is conducted individually, ensuring a personal and intimate experience.
How to Arrange a Baptism
To arrange a baptism, please email Sophie Wilson our Parish Administrator. She will guide you through the preparation process and help you schedule the ceremony.
Family Service
The Family Service takes place every Sunday at 10:00 am, except during August. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to our vibrant community.
